01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
About this place
Tucked into the residential streets of Machiya, the neighborhood izakaya Maru offers fresh seafood and seasonal homestyle dishes in an unhurried setting. The menu features seasonal sashimi and small plates that reflect the establishment's origins as a sushi shop, bringing out the natural flavors of the catch. A particular favorite among regulars is the buri daikon, a comforting simmered dish where fatty yellowtail infuses thick cuts of daikon radish with rich, savory dashi broth.
From Sashimi to Simmered Dishes and Hot Pots
The sashimi selection provides plenty of variety, ranging from crisp whelk and rich, fatty mackerel to lighter choices on the daily specials board such as flounder with ponzu or fresh raw oysters with ponzu. The kitchen also turns out distinctive drinking snacks, including simmered yellowtail roe, redfish oran-yaki, and tenderly braised pork cartilage. For communal dining, hot pots range from duck in a special soy-based broth to oyster hot pot in a secret miso broth, alongside the Maru Course, which features fugu sashimi (tessa) and fugu hot pot (tecchiri).
Comfortable for Everything from a Solo Drink to a Gathering
The drinks list is built to complement the food, featuring a sudachi Kakubin highball with a splash of fresh citrus and subtle sweetness, apple cider vinegar sours, fragrant hirezake, and sakes like Kikusui. With its relaxed atmosphere, the dining room suits a casual solo drink at the counter just as well as an evening with friends on the raised tatami seating. Open from 17:00 in the evening until 24:00 at night on all days except Wednesdays, it makes a reliable stop for anything from a post-work drink to a leisurely dinner.
